Are hotels in Jersey City a good base to visit Manhattan from?

When we are visiting NYC later this year we are thinking of staying outside of Manhattan to obtain better value accomodation as prices of top quality hotels approaching Christmas are just too high. Would hotels across the Hudson in Jersey City be a practical alternative or too far?

It appears that the PATH train nearby connects this area but how long would this take and as most ‘tourist’ attractions are mid central Manhattan does this go to the right places?
Also, our flights are in and out of Newark so staying West of Manhattan makes sense for that reason too.

I’ve stayed in Jersey City and went over to Manhattan during the day. You have to factor in the price of transportation- we took water taxi and it only took a few minutes. They then had buses which took you into the city more. We normally got dropped off near Radio City Music Hall- you can take the subway from there to go to other tourist attractions. It was nice because you got the view of the city and not the price!

    Yes.

Try the Hyatt Jersey City if the rate is decent. It was a great hotel with incredible views of the city. And its right next to the path. Basically a 30 second walk from the Hyatt door. You can be to Manhattan in less then 10 mins from when you leave in the place.

Yes, it generaly a good idea, especially if your hotel is near PATH trains. One possible problem is that the PATH dosn’t run late nights so if you plan is to party into the night you will need to take an expensive taxi back. PATH turns into a pumpkin at midnight.

Like people have said, if you plan to stay out late it may not be the best idea. Make sure you’re near a PATH train if that’s the case. There’s also a Sheraton in Weehawken that’s nice.

Yes. It’s a great way to reduce costs. The Marriott Courtyard right next to Pavonia-Newport Station is nice and 10 minutes by rush hour PATH into downtown, and there are several other hotels within a couple blocks of there.
The northern terminus of the PATH system is 33rd Street at 6th Avenue (20 minutes’ ride from JC), so from there you can either transfer to the NYC subway system or walk to your midtown destination.
BTW, some of the above posters are wrong, PATH does run (infrequently) all night. http://www.panynj.gov/CommutingTravel/path/html/time.html

frequently visit friends in JC and have put up visiting relatives there
