What are the differences between township government and city government?

Does anyone know differences between township government and city government? Thanks for your help.

Townships are usually unincorporated areas of the County and are set up as an advisory board with no real powers. City governments have voting powers over everything within their incorporated area. They also sit on other bodies and are somtimes given voting powers over regional issues.

Note that some townships may have voting rights/powers in some states.

    Depends on where you live.

    Usually in a City, there is a Mayor in charge and then a city council.

    In a rural town, there is a City Manager and then the selectman or council.

    Really not much difference except the Mayor has more power to make and implement rules. The City Manager usually has no rule making power but instead Carry’s out the rule imposed by the selectman or council.

    Cities are just that – cities. Townships and boroughs may have one or more towns within, but cover more area than the town itself. Boroughs are usually run by a council, townships by a board of supervisors, and cities by mayors.

    I really didn’t know that townships had their own government. I lived in Windham Township but when we voted it was to the city of Windham (which really wasn’t”t a city). If we had a problem in the township we would have to call the local sheriff not the Windham police. If you got arrested you went to the county jail not the local jail at the police station, If there was a fire one of two town fire departments would be dispatched. after writing all this I realize I really don’t know the answer to your question but really would like to know it
