What is it like to live in Gilbert or Chandler AZ?

Monday, May 31st, 2010

If you have a family with children ages 0 – 18, and you live in Gilbert or Chandler, can you tell me what it is like to live there? What kinds of things are there to do? How are the schools? How safe is it? How "family-friendly" is it? Is it like a smaller community, or bigger-city feel? Are there plenty of things to do in the area? What do you and your children do for fun in the summer when it is so hot? Do you love living there, or would you prefer to live somewhere else in the area? What would you say are the differences between Gilbert and Chandler?

i’m amazed at how much negativity you’re receiving about this!!!

i’ve lived in az for about 16 years now and i currently live in chandler and i LOVE it.

i’ve lived in glendale, scottsdale, mesa, and tempe and i can tell you out of all those cities-i would still choose chandler…..

i have 3 children ages 7,5,and 4 and my boyfriend also has two nieces ages 7 and 4 that live in chandler as well.

there are tons of kid oriented things to do very close by. chandler mall is a great place to take the kids to unwind and do a little shopping. there is always a walmart or target nearby as well. we have a local park down the street from our home with a huge lake, free water park for the kids to splash around in, and a train to ride-we love it. the area is safe-i know all of my neighbors and i have yet to see a cop car in the four years we have lived there. we are members of an awesome church and the people are great. there are several community pools too with water slides, and a kiddie area for toddlers and an ice skating rink that my girls just love. the city of awahtuhkee is close by and has a few kid things i like to take my girls to as well.

gilbert isn’t much different from chandler other than it does have more room to grow so expect more people and businesses to pop up.

the schools in my area are great-i’ve had no problems with my oldest who is going into second grade and my middle child will be starting kindergarten this year.

here are some links of kid oriented things that might prove helpful along with some other links to tell you about the cities…good luck to you

I can’t find an apartment. I am on section 8 city of Chandler AZ and I have a judgment on my credit, help!

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

I just recently went through a divorce and I am also raising a 7 year old child by my self I don’t recieve child support and I am attending school full time so I am pretty much living off of my student loans until I get my R.N. bachelors degree. I am trying to come up in the world but since I depend on the state right now I keep getting knocked down. One does what one has to do to survive even if it’s not what one wants to do.

Try renting from an private owner. A lot of corporations won’t allow you to rent there when you have a judgment on your credit, especially if it is from a landlord. So i would definitely try renting from a private owner, they don’t screen as well as a corporation would.

Do I charge the sales tax of my city where the business is located or where my customer is located?

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

For example: My business is in Mesa, AZ and most of my customers are in different cities in Arizona – Phoenix, Chandler, Tempe, etc. Whose city tax do I charge?

Thank you!

you charge sales tax where your business is based.

Moving to AZ…which city is better Chandler or Gilbert?

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

We are planning to relocate from Wisconsin to the Phoenix area. Would like to get your opinion on whether it is better to live in Chandler or Gilbert. Any additional thoughts on Queen Creek would also be helpful.

I don’t know that I would do either. There are some nice homes in both but both areas are getting some bad reps. Chandler in particular is going downhill fast, but mostly East Chandler. The areas closer to the West, near Ahwatukee, are still okay. I have heard the schools in Gilbert district are horrible. There are several parents at our school that drive their kids 30-minutes every day to get to us for a better school. Unless you enjoy spending most of your day in stand still traffic OR are retired and don’t have to work OR can work from home, I would not recommend Queen Creek. The home prices are cheaper but it is Sooooo far out that you will spend half your day commuting. And Phoenix metro traffic is horrible, especially in the East valley. I hear word of mouth that the schools there are really bad too.

You can get crime stats for different areas through the police department websites for the cities. You can check out school ratings and compare at:

Of those two, I would have to say I have heard fewer bad things about Gilbert. The gangs and coyotes seem to be taking over Chandler.

were moving to arizona, what city/town is better chandler or glendale?

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

we as a family are really into art and diversity is also important.
i have a 6th grader and a 11th grader so academics is very important.
also is there a lot to do these areas?

I grew up in Glendale (from 6th grade to age 19) but now live in Chandler.

I will never again move back to Glendale-I HATE it there!! it’s overall rundown and old. there are some places that are safe and clean but they are few and far between. the schools I attended were always overcrowded and the issues with gang violence ran rampent not only in the school but my neighborhood as well. there aren’t too many things for children to do there either (outside of your normal parks, sports arenas, etc). the malls in the area are quite old too.

i’ve lived in Chandler for the past 5 years and love it. my neighborhood is safe and quiet, my girls attend a small charter school (which is actually in Tempe about 10 mins away), we go to church near our house, and all 3 of my daughters do cheer and gymnastics locally. there are tons of places to take kids- (nearby city of gilbert has an awesome preserve where you can fish, hike,etc)- paseo trail is an 18 mile hiking trail that is fun to walk along, jog, bike, etc. chandler fashion center is fairly new and has lots of shops/nice restaurants.

I typically do a 4 mile jog around my neighborhood at 9pm at night and feel totally safe (there are several people out walking their dogs) and most of the stores I shop at are clean and safe.

the kyrene school district is one of the better ones (San Tan junior high and Highland high schools are great schools in the chandler area) but personally speaking, I feel that any az public school suffers due to budget restraints, overcrowding, etc. the charter school my kids attend does not charge me tuition but they have several fundraisers throughout the year that help pay bills for the school.

hope this helps!!
